FROM DR ROBERTS

Parents you may be interested in the below analysis of the National School Opinion Survey completed at the end of last term by Parents, Staff and Students. A complete set of Surveys will be given to Board Members at our next Board Meeting. The Parent Survey results was discussed at our last meeting.

In 2022, the bi-annual National School Opinion Survey was distributed to parents, staff and Year 5 and 6 students. Hawker Park Primary School (HPPS) has 151 families, 39 staff members and 55 Year 5 and 6 students. There were 75 parent returned surveys (50%) and 27 (18%) started but not submitted; 27 staff returned surveys (70%) and 46 student returned surveys (84%). Within each survey, there were a number of standard set Government questions – 20 Parents, 22 Staff 14 Students – and those developed by the school  – 9 Parents, 11 Staff, 4 Students – in line with our Business Plan.

Of the 20 standard questions, the average score out of 5 given by Parents was over 4

Parent Survey Graph

Of the 22 standard questions, the average score out of 5 given by Staff was over 4.5

Staff Survey Graph

Of the 14 standard questions, the average score out of 5 given by Students was 4

Students Survey Graph

Regarding the questions developed by the school in line with our Business Plan the responses summary combining ‘agree’ and ‘strongly agree’ was as follows:

  • Of the 9 Business Plan questions, the average percentage score given by Parents was 77%
  • Of the 11 Business Plan questions, the average percentage score given by Staff was 95%
  • Of the 4 Business Plan questions, the average percentage score given by Students was 84%

The last two questions were added by the school and gave opportunity for parents to give an opinion on what the school was doing well and an opinion on how the school could improve. As half the school’s parent population did not complete the survey, the following were the opinions of 50%.  Please click here National School Opinion Survey Analysis – Parent Comments 2022 for the analysis of the comments. Working with the school board, an operation plan will be devised to implement constructive suggestions made by parents.

Thank you to everyone, parents, staff and students, who completed the survey. I am sure you will agree that the results confirm what most of us already know, that is, the school community values the work done at Hawker Park PS and that the school has a very positive reputation. Our survey results re-affirm the excellent External Review Report received by our fabulous school last year. We can all be proud of our results and will continue to progress and make improvements as suggested in the surveys by implementing our motto “Together We Grow!”.

SCHOOL PROCESSES – DEVELOPING A RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN (RAP)

At our last School Board Meeting, our first DRAFT Reconciliation Action Plan (RAT) was presented. To add knowledge and value to our RAT, and to move forward, we had one of our dads, Dr Daniel Vujcich, as our guest speaker. Daniel has volunteered to be a member of a Working Party to further develop our RAP and writes the following.

‘Respect is one of Hawker Park Primary School’s guiding values and, as a school community, we are committed to demonstrating our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by taking meaningful action to advance reconciliation. A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a formal statement of commitment to reconciliation. Over 1,000 organisations have a formal RAP, including a number of Perth primary schools. The Board has agreed to develop a RAP to be launched in 2023 and is seeking expressions of interest from school community members to join a Working Party to oversee the process. If you would like to get involved or find out more please email daniel.vujcich@curtin.edu.au

Thank you Daniel.
