FROM MR ETHERIDGE
What an exciting and busy two weeks we have had at school since our last Hawker Headlines, with many group and individual achievements.
SPEAK UPS
On Monday 16 August we had our school Speak Up finalists participate in the district awards with Taisiya (Yr.6) making it through to the next round.
STATE CROSS COUNTRY
On Thursday 12 August HPPS had five students representing the school at the Primary School State Cross Country; running between 2km and 2.5km. All children placed well in the top 25% of their events and each event had over 300 participants.
RELATIONSHIP AUSTRALIA WORKSHOP
On Wednesday night 18 August fourteen parents attended a Relationship Australia Workshop held here at Hawker Park PS. Relationship Australia are a non for profit organisation committed to enhancing the lives of communities, families and individuals and supporting positive and respectful relationships. Click on the link if your interested in finding out more or participating in upcoming workshops. https://www.relationshipswa.org.au/courses/upcoming-courses
WORLD OF MATHS INCURSION
On Thursday 19 August our students were scratching their heads as they were challenged during the well-received World of Maths incursion.
COCKMAN HOUSE
In addition to all of this the year 2 students had an excursion to Cockman House on Friday. Cockman House provides students with an encounter to what life was like in the past and learn about the families that lived here over a 130-year period.
Completed in 1860, this family home of three generations is a rare historic place of continuous residence by descendants of the original building. It presents a pioneer story that began with James and Mary Ann Cockman at the beginning of the Swan River Colony and progresses alongside the development of the Wanneroo district.
ONE BIG VOICE
Friday also saw the school choir perform commendably at the One Big Voice concert at Perth RAC Arena along with 7000 other girls and boys from choirs around the state. A big thank you to Mrs Subotic for organising this and for Mrs Hazebroek stepping in at the last moment to take the children after Mrs Subotic was taken ill.
Speaking of being ill, there have been a lot of nasty bugs flying around lately with even myself being off for several days. We always want to see your lovely children at school but thank you as well for keeping sick children at home.
This week is Book Week and our annual book parade will close this week’s year one assembly. The much loved Lego Masters competition has started this week at lunch times. All children are currently training hard for next week’s faction carnival too as selections become finalised. Programs for which will be sent home this Friday with all children.
Our new building is really starting to shape and it appears the roof will be on soon. We are hoping for an early December official opening.

LEARNING JOURNEY – TA9
In year six, over the last few weeks, we have been completing a STEM project with Mrs Cahill.
We have been looking at water filtration systems and the importance of being able to recycle water. Each group was given a resource to investigate and find out how well it was able to filter ‘dirty’ water. These included cotton, paper towel, tissues, gravel, coffee filters and sand.
After this, we drew our own designs (incorporating a number of these items) and built them. We then tested our creations and discussed which ones worked best and how we could adapt them to get a better result. It was interesting to see how clear we could get the water and which resources worked best as filters.
CHAPLAINS CHAT
I’m not sure about you but I cannot believe we are 1 week away from Spring! The rain has definitely been wonderful for all the gardens and farms but I am looking forward to the warmer weather.
This week I have been pondering the word time. Time never seems to stand still, each year I hear people say, as do I, how quickly the days, weeks, months, years go by and to savour it while we are able.
Here are a few ideas for connecting with our children and one another, let’s savour the time we have together while we have it. We all react differently in times of uncertainty and change, let’s take time for ourselves to refresh, for our families to connect and others to share kindness and compassion.
Have a wonderful week and take care,
Chevonne
CAN YOU HELP
Mrs Stangoni has started an amazing and very popular Sewing Club but she needs more knitting needles. If you have any that you are willing to donate, please pop them into the front office.

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
Containers for change drop off day – Tuesday 31 August 7:45am – 8:30am in the Car Park at Hawker Park while running club is underway. You don’t even need to get out of your car to drop your eligible containers off, just pop into a parking bay & we’ll come to you! All proceeds go towards supporting our kids at school and the containers will be recycled into useful things rather than becoming landfill.
PICTURE PLATES
The P&C are organising melamine plates to be made this year featuring your child’s artwork! Details are below and templates are available at the office and Zig Zags (just be careful not to roll, fold or crush the templates as those marks will show on the finished products…. the exact reason we are not sending home via schoolbags!). If you can’t make it to the school, just let admin know and we’ll help the P&C organise another way to get the templates to you. We can accept images up until the Friday 17th September to ensure the plates are back to parents by Christmas – a great way to tick the grandparents gift off the list!
CASINO NIGHT
What a great reason to dress up. Come join the P&C for Casino Night. See the flyer attached for further information.
