FROM DR ROBERTS

Welcome to Term 3.  We look forward to our eloquent students representing the school in the Interschool Speak Up Awards.  In week three, our assembly will be run by the year 5 students. At this assembly, I hope to introduce you to Dr Katie Legge, a Chiropractor, who provided some very informative professional learning for teachers.  Mid-term, we have our exciting SMARTS day and towards the end of the term, we will be hosting the Jumps and Throws with the Athletics Carnival early in Term 4.

We wish Mrs Sandie Beard a wonderful and relaxing long service leave holiday.  A well-deserved break from her role as Manager of Corporate Services (MCS) at our school.  During her absence, Mrs Haley Kelly will be working as the MCS, and front office will be backfilled.

Mrs Subotic will also be on long service leave for the first four weeks of this term and we wish her a restful holiday.

Some of you may remember, we are involved in Respectful Relationships Education (RRE).  Some staff, including myself, have already attended professional learning with the remainder of staff having the opportunity of being involved after school with a presentation from Starick.  Basically RRE is a holistic approach to creating and maintaining respect within school communities.  Schools are used to support students, staff and the wider community to build healthy relationships based on mutual respect and equality.  As you know, one of our values is respect.  There are many aspects to RRE. One to begin with, we will work on trying to promote gender equality in the classroom by using such practises as using gender-neutral language (those whose name begins with rather than boys, girls), avoid stereotyping children, monitoring our interactions with children, ensuring games are for all genders (rather than this is a boys or girls game), use non-gender specific terms when referring to occupations (eg fire attendant, chairperson).

After a second bicycle was stolen from our bike rack, Mr Etheridge organised with the P&C for a fence to be erected around the bike area.  I am delighted to inform you, this has been completed.

SCHOOL BUSINESS PLAN 2021-2025

In order to collect data to assist in assessing our School Business Plan, we add questions to the National School Opinion Survey administered every two years.  Hopefully this mandatory survey will be available to schools before term 4.  To the survey, schools may add questions. Most of the questions we add relate to Target 1 of the Business Plan “Relationships and Partnerships” and each of the 6 Targets has approximately 5 strategies and Indicators one being

Encourage respectful relationships between staff, students and parents.

At Hawker Park, our aim is to practise our values of respect, kindness and manners.  Respectful relationships are grown and nurtured through listening, organising meetings, formal and informal so voices may be heard, conducting surveys on a need’s basis, having parent representatives, organising events and more.  Some formal/planned meetings include our information evening in week two term one followed by our welcome picnic, parent teacher meetings in term two, School Board Meetings, P&C Meetings throughout the year and our end of year Christmas concert. Throughout the year, again on a need’s basis, we have numerous case conferences, and numerous parent/teacher meetings before and/or after school. We conduct numerous events where the whole school community comes together and display respectful relationships such as Class Assemblies, Excursions, Incursions, Sports Carnivals, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals, Easter Raffles, Speak Up Awards, SMARTS Day, Sustainable Housing displays by the year 6 students, Book Week, Harmony Week with one of the highlights International Food Lunch.  At the school level, students are taught to use the Zones of Regulation and Philosophy where life skills based on respect, are learned.  This year, the staff has started working with STARICK to learn more about Respectful Relationships Education.

SCHOOL BOARD

Our next School Board Meeting on Wednesday 7 August at 6:00pm will be a Public Meeting.  The Board members invite parents to attend this meeting and observe.  You will see how meetings are conducted and what is discussed.  We intend providing a Webex link for parents who cannot attend.

SCHOOL PROCESSES/ Serious Accidents at School and Medical Information

Fortunately, we very rarely have serious or life-threatening accidents at school.  Should a serious or life-threatening accident occur at school, every attempt will be made to contact the parents first.  If parents cannot be contacted, then an ambulance will be called after consultation with the Admin Team.  A staff member will accompany the child in an ambulance to the hospital.  The staff member will be in contact with the school and parents will be kept informed by the school regarding the whereabouts of the child.

Please note, ambulance costs remain the responsibility of parents.

For head or eye injuries parents will be contacted.  For other minor injuries, staff members will use their discretion regarding whether parents will be contacted.

During recess and lunch breaks, staff are rostered to be on duty.  Duty bags, for duty staff, have notes and basic first aid materials. First aid items may be used by the duty person while on the playground. The duty staff member may write a note for the child to take to the office for first aid treatment.  This may include, for example, a cold pack, band aids, sting creams and the like.  Staff will always attempt to check for allergies before application.

Some students have health plans which are visible to staff in the First Aid room.  Parents must update health plans annually and on a need’s basis throughout the year.  Students have health plans for various reasons such as serious allergies, regular medication, asthma, and other conditions.

Generally, school staff do not administer medication without a health plan signed off by a medical practitioner.

STUDENTS LEAVING HPPS

To assist with our School and class planning for 2025, please inform Admin ASAP if you know that your child/ren will not be returning to Hawker Park Primary School in the coming year. This does not apply to our current Year 6 students.

Thank you

SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Professional Learning from a Member of the Community – Dr Katie Legge..

“Hi there! I’m Dr Katie, a Chiropractor at The Spine Studio Warwick. I had the pleasure of speaking about the nervous system with the teaching team at Hawker Park Primary School just before the end of Term 2. We discussed how a regulated nervous system can be an incredible asset in the classroom, for teachers, students and parents. Some of the ways we can encourage a regulated nervous system is with deep, focused breathing, guided meditations (age appropriate), as well as movement and exercise.

As Chiropractors working with children, monitoring developmental milestones, as well as posture and scoliosis is vitally important. A big passion of ours is ensuring that children can grow with a regulated nervous system and be able to show up as their best selves in their lives, classrooms, sport fields or wherever their passion lies. With our lives becoming more demanding, empowering our children with a strong nervous system and posture can be an incredible tool during childhood. If you are noticing challenges concerning posture, concentration, coordination or difficulty with age-appropriate tasks, the start of term is a great time to get checked and start off the school term on the right foot. If you have any questions, I’m looking forward to meeting you at the next school assembly.

  • Dr Katie Legge, Chiropractor at The Spine Studio Warwick”

DID YOU KNOW?

  • If your child is unwell, please keep the child at home.
  • As a courtesy, the school will always ring the parent/guardian if a child sustains any head or eye injury. As we are not medical practitioners, parents/carers make the decision regarding what steps to take next, such as, coming to the school to check their child for themselves, taking the child home, taking the child to the doctor.

KINDY 2025 ENROLMENTS CLOSED!
