FROM DR ROBERTS

The school census was last Friday, and our current numbers are 232 including Kindergarten which is an increase of ten students from this time last year.  Hawker Park maintains its positive reputation within the school and the broader community to the extent that parents seek to enrol their students at our fabulous school.  We now have a wait list for our Pre-primary class.  Congratulations to all of you for ensuring our values are known and practised by your children and modelled by you, the parents, because it is our values of respect, kindness and manners, and more, that support our sought- after school.

Last week we practised our evacuation drill and this week we practiced our lockdown procedure so if your children mention that something happened at school, it will possibly relate to our drills and nothing to worry about.

A huge thankyou to all parents who volunteer their time in a variety of ways, including but not limited to the School board, P&C and more, we appreciate your time which is precious.

Our first Board Meeting for the year will be tonight, Wednesday 22 February beginning at 6:00pm.  We thank Nicole Arnold, who is the Board Chair, for introducing Board Members to you at the Welcome Picnic recently.  We thank our staff member Mrs Tess Jones, who served on the Board for 6 years and is stepping down to allow another staff member, Miss Steph Germano, to be involved and experience our valuable Board Membership.

The P&C had their AGM last Wednesday 15 and we congratulate the new P&C President, Cassy O’Sullivan.  A sincere thank you for the work completed by Bec Chamberlain, the outgoing president.  To add to what Mr Etheridge told the P&C membership at the meeting, the school genuinely appreciates all the voluntary work undertaken by P&C members that, ultimately, benefit all our children. Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend the meeting.

SCHOOL PROCESSES – multi-year or multiple same year classes

If we have multi-year classes, or two classes of the same year level, we allow students to complete a sociogram so teachers know who students believe they work well with and/or are friends with.  Sociograms are completed before students are placed in classes.  The results of the sociogram and other factors, such as class numbers, gender, strengths, needs and more, may be taken into consideration when students are placed.  Teachers spend a great deal of time carefully placing students to maximise their learning.

YEAR 5 AND 6 DRUGS WORKSHOP

It’s never too late to start talking with your child about staying safer around alcohol or the online environment.

Your child’s attitudes and behaviours are influenced by many things – friends, social media, advertising and cultural expectations around alcohol use. Fortunately, despite these influences, parents remain the single strongest influence on their child’s choices. As a parent you can act now to guide your child’s behaviour and help keep them safe. You can and do make a difference. “Supporting Family Conversations” is a program and online resource that provides parents with advice and practical tools to assist with commencing and maintaining positive communication with your child around these (and other) difficult topics.

Hawker Park in conjunction with the Departments Road Safety and Drug Education Branch will be hosting a “Supporting Family Conversations” parent information workshop on:

Thursday 11th May 2023, time 6pm
