FROM DR ROBERTS
Here we are, the last week of term three. Last Monday, the year 3 and 5 parents would have received their child’s NAPLAN report. One of our aims this year was to try to focus on our capable students and improve our NAPLAN results in the top 20% in each learning area compared to the national average. The aim is always to have greater than 20% at the top and fewer than 20% at the bottom. Of course, the ideal would be to have 0% of students in the bottom 20%. As soon as we are permitted to, we will provide further information. Although we cannot at this point make comparisons with like-schools, and we are still waiting to have all data finalised, from information we have available, based on individual student results, we are very proud of student achievements. In all areas, in both classes our school scored well above the national average. Congratulations to all students and to our fabulous teachers for the great achievements this year. We are very proud of you.
This last week has been historical with Queen Elizabeth II passing away and King Charles III ascending the throne. I explained to the students last Friday morning 9 Sept. that the flag was at half-mast because Queen Elizabeth had passed away. I said that she was highly respected for her grace and dedication to her work. She was our Queen for seventy years and a symbol of stability and continuity. The flag flying at half-mast was a sign of respect. I asked teachers to explain further at their year level.
As you will be aware, the Prime Minister announced a public holiday as a national day of mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 22 September. Consequently, tomorrow, the school will be closed. The inter-school athletics carnival planned for Thursday has been rescheduled to Monday 24 October (week 3 term 4) at Marangaroo PS as before. The interschool jumps and throws were held yesterday.
As this is the last communication for the term, I wish you all a safe and happy two-week holiday. I look forward to seeing staff on Monday 10 October and students on Tuesday 11 October.
STUDENTS NOT RETURNING TO HPPS IN 2023
To assist with our current planning for 2023 would you please inform Admin as soon as possible if you know that your child will not be returning to Hawker Park Primary School in the coming year. This does not apply to our current Year 6 students. Please reply to hawkerpark.ps@education.wa.edu.au

- its Magpie Season. August to November is nesting season for magpies and occasionally male magpies become territorial to protect their young and may swoop if they think the nest or offspring are in danger. If you are swooped by a magpie, stay calm, do not run and avoid looking towards swooping birds
NORTH METRO EDUCATION REGIONAL OFFICE STUDENT ART DISPLAY
The North Metropolitan Education Regional Office (NMERO) is moving to a new home at Tuart College. This Art Display is an opportunity for students from North Metro schools (Kindy to Year 12) to have their work exhibited around the new office space.
Interested students at Hawker Park Primary submitted their artwork to Mrs Liz Everall. Staff took their time to vote for the best 2 pieces. A big Congratulations to Owen TA4 and Vivian TA9 for their beautiful interpretation of “Connection, Family, Community and Country”. Well done to everyone else who took the time to create and submit their work, it was a very hard decision.
NUMERACY BASIC FACT MILESTONES
Teachers at Hawker Park have been participating in numeracy professional learning with Dr Paul Swan, and are implementing various new strategies into their teaching. One area of numeracy that is being focused on is basic fact fluency (recall). To assist with this you will find a series of Milestone documents that support teachers planning.
The Milestones provide a default position for Hawker Park’s whole school approach for the development of properties and mental strategies associated with basic facts.
The sound understanding of Basic Facts is an integral part in the development of a student’s overall numeracy ability. Parental understanding of expectations and assistance at home with the development of a child’s fluency in numeracy through dice games oral questioning etc can be of great assistance in a child increasing confidence in numeracy.

SUPPORTING FAMILY CONVERSATIONS – YEAR 6 PARENTS
It’s never too late to start talking with your child about staying safer around alcohol or the online environment.
Your child’s attitudes and behaviours are influenced by many things – friends, social media, advertising and cultural expectations around alcohol use. Fortunately, despite these influences, parents remain the single strongest influence on their child’s choices. As a parent you can act now to guide your child’s behaviour and help keep them safe. You can and do make a difference.
“Supporting Family Conversations” is a program and online resource that provides parents with advice and practical tools to assist with commencing and maintaining positive communication with your child around these (and other) difficult topics.
Hawker Park in conjunction with the Departments Road Safety and Drug Education Branch will be hosting a “Supporting Family Conversations” parent information workshop on: Thursday 27 October 2022, (time tbc).
Thank you
