FROM DR. ROBERTS

Welcome parents, students and staff and a very warm welcome to our new families and Kindergarten families. We have had one of the coolest starts to a school year that I can remember. Wonderful for everyone! Hawker Park is a fantastic school with highly professional and dedicated staff who have worked many days during their holidays to ensure a smooth transition back into exciting school life.

We think of all those who have been dealing with the bushfire, including some of our parents, and wish them the best despite the devastation.

We look forward to a pleasant and relaxing evening next Tuesday at the welcome picnic. In anticipation, I thank all those who will be able to attend the Information Evening and the Welcome Picnic.

Thank you to all parents who are proud, positive and caring of their school and have ensured that students are ready to learn. Thank you for sending students in their school uniform including the safe school hat. A huge thank you to our generous parent, Sue, who made herself available in the Uniform Shop to allow new parents the opportunity to purchase uniforms before the start of the school year.

Our current numbers are a very healthy 232. We have a wait list for Kindergarten and had to decline students out of area as some classes are at capacity.

Our school has a highly justified positive reputation in our community. Thank you to all those parents who continue to fully support the school and speak positively about our highly professional staff and fabulous teaching and learning for your children.

Like last year, we invite you onto the school site but please allow your child to enter classrooms independently to encourage independence and allow teachers to support students in need.

If there are no further changes, our first school assembly will be on Thursday 18 February starting off with the year 6 class. Our aim is to begin promptly at 8:30 and finish at 9:00.  Please remember social distancing.

As mentioned in the SkoolBag 29 January, WA is still in Phase 4 of the COVID-19 recovery plan thus social distancing and the 2 square metre rule for adults continues. In schools, cleaning throughout the day will be maintained for term one. We continue with high standards of hygiene practices, hand sanitiser, water bottles that may be left at school and re-filled daily from the water fountains and requests to keep unwell children home from school.

On behalf of all staff members, we thank you in anticipation for your understanding and co-operation.  We look forward to a brilliant and productive 2021.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT SURVEY

Thank you for the fantastic response to our Christmas Concert Survey in the last week of 2020. We had over a 100 respondents, indicating how much this event means to the school community.

There were many positive comments as well as constructive feedback for all options presented. On balance the survey indicated more support for one evening Christmas Concert K-6, rather than split and day time concerts. (See graphs below)
This year’s K-6 Christmas Concert will be held on December 13th at 6pm.

2021 FAMILY INFORMATION BOOKLET

Information in the Family Information Booklet, such as School Chaplain, School Uniform, Canteen and much more.

The Family Information Booklet is also available on the schools website.

2021 Family Information Handbook

CURRICULUM INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

The first two days of school provided opportunities for staff to develop professionally and discuss numerous issues. Our focus this year will continue to be on Mathematics and Mental Maths, Spelling, Philosophy, Science and health – especially resilience. The spelling programme we are continuing with is Diana Rigg.

PARENT INTERVIEWS-GREATER FLEXIBILITY

Information in the Family Information Booklet

This year we are continuing to encourage parents to make an appointment time to speak to classroom teachers about their child rather than closing the school towards the end of term and having interviews on one afternoon. The adjustment allows for greater flexibility for parents, more time to speak to the teacher and students stay at school all day.

VALUES

Our values are RESPECT, KINDNESS and MANNERS.

We expect our students to display these values and encourage the whole school community to role model these values and behaviours to support children.

NAPLAN 2021

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 since 2008.

NAPLAN tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school curriculum.

NAPLAN testing will be conducted in normal school time from Monday 10 May for 2 weeks. Be aware that NAPLAN is online again this year for years 3 and 5.

Year 3 will use iPads and Year 5 will use their own laptops.

If you wish your child to be involved in NAPLAN and you wish to give your child the best opportunity to do well in the test, please try to plan to take holidays during school holiday times. If this is impossible, please try to organise holidays after the NAPLAN weeks.

DID YOU KNOW THAT …………….

  • children with medical conditions need to have a medical action plan, reviewed annually and signed by a professional. The school requires a copy of this plan
  • Due to the work on our new building commencing, parking on Sanday Pl may be disrupted
  • If your child is sick or not attending school, you need to notify the front office on 9422 2000

STUDENT MOBILE PHONES IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Student Mobile Phones in Public Schools policy bans students from using mobile phones from the time they enter school grounds to the conclusion of the school day.

This includes smart watches and listening accessories, such as headphones and earbuds.

The new policy supports staff and students to:
• reduce the potential for learning distraction
• protect the privacy of staff and students
• improve health and wellbeing
• reduce the chance of students bringing external issues to school through technology.

Kindergarten to Year 6 students:
• are not permitted to have a mobile phone in their possession during the school day
• must store their mobile phone using an appropriate approach or location determined by the school.

At Hawker Park, students leave their mobile phones at the front office and collect them at the end of the day.

P&C

Another year ahead of us, hopefully with some fun and games, lots of community spirit and new things for our school.

The P&C group for 2021 will be officially formed at the AGM on Wednesday February 24 7pm in the library. Joining costs $1 and gives you voting rights. Anyone can come along though and have a listen, have a say, have an opportunity to meet new people and have a bit of fun.

We are on track with getting a new shed alongside the new developments at the school. The aim is to have a clean and organised place to store our supplies and keep track of things that can be used for events every year. Think water pistols for parents to use at the Lapathon.

The calendar of events will be set with the new committee so watch this space for what we hope will be the biggest and best parent fun night ever (don’t we all need it!)

A big warm welcome to all the new families to the school. We will say hi at the welcome picnic and if anyone wants to find out more about our P&C please feel free to chat to any of us. We are a friendly and as normal as anyone bunch.

Thanks and have a great year.
