FROM DR ROBERTS

The P&C members are such an asset to our beautiful school.  Through their fundraising, thanks to all parents and carers who contribute, the children always benefit.  Currently, the P&C is considering new games for the playground.  More information will become available soon.

NAPLAN Results: Individual Student Reports for years 3 and 5 have already been sent home.

At a school level, HPPS was above the national average in years 3 and 5 all areas – numeracy, reading, writing, and conventions of language.  Of course, we can always improve, especially in the year 3 writing, but, overall, our students and staff deserve to be congratulated on the results.

SCHOOL BUSINESS PLAN 2021-2025

In order to collect data to assist in assessing our School Business Plan, we add questions to the National School Opinion Survey administered every two years.  Hopefully this mandatory survey will be available to schools before term 4.  To the survey, schools may add questions. Most of the questions we add relate to Target 1 of the Business Plan “Relationships and Partnerships” and each of the 6 Targets has approximately 5 strategies and Indicators two being

Ensure clear communications and partnerships both within the school community and with key stakeholders.

At each School Board Meeting, the Principal reports using the Statement of Expectations.  She also uses this document, #4 Strengthen Educationally Powerful Connections, to strengthen and make connections with the school community. The school engages with families in numerous ways. At the beginning of the year, through an information evening followed by a family picnic and at the end of the year with our graduation ceremony and morning tea in addition to our end of year Christmas Concert.  During the year we invite parents to join in the international lunch for Harmony Week. We engage with parents during the school and interschool cross country held at HPPS and athletics day, a highlight of the year.  Daily with phone calls and emails on a needs basis, interviews with classroom teachers mid to late term two and on a needs basis throughout the year.  Again, as relevant issues arise, we survey parents and bi-annually, we survey parents, students and staff.   Two more ways of engaging with parents to better understand needs for their children are through the P&C meetings held two or three times each term and more formally through the School Board Meetings held on a termly basis.  With the assistance of the Board, a few years ago, a Communication Policy was formulated.  In each Hawker Headlines, we have a section called School Processes where the school communicates processes in place at the school.

HPPS works in partnership with other government agencies, for example, The Department of Communities, and support services to assist children on a need’s basis.  We employ the services of a Speech Therapists and an Occupational Therapist when required.   Through funding from the Department of Education we use the services of a School Psychologist who attends for 3/4 of a day on a weekly basis.

We have a partnership with Edith Cowan University with pre-service teachers working at HPPS and professional learning sessions are offered for staff through the university.

Through the university, we are hosting two Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy students to the end of the year. Both student Counsellors will be working at HPPS every Thursday and Friday morning.  Their field placement requires them to work with 5-6 students each.

We seek opportunities to work collaboratively with local communities, including Aboriginal communities, to determine aspirations and set directions for students.  At the beginning of Harmony Week, Mrs Everall invites Aboriginal Staff from Regional Office to work with students teaching history through the ‘Blanket Activity’. During the past eighteen months we have developed a Reconciliation Plan with activities for students to undertake. Through local Aboriginal artists, we have had a mural of the seasons painted.  This is a work in progress and ongoing attempts are made to secure grants for this purpose and completion.

We collaborate with other public school Principals to ensure schools do not operate in isolation or in competition with each other.  Hawker Park PS is part of the Balcatta Warwick Principal’s Network (BW Network) which is now made up of two Clusters. Principals meet once each term and share information and ideas. Our cluster includes Hawker Park PS, Greenwood PS, East Hamersley PS, Glendale PS and Warwick Senior High.  The Principals of these schools meet either off site or at one of the schools at least once each term to discuss various issues, situations and needs.  We informally talk about how we can support each other and work together.  Through the Network, we have money to support staff.  For example, with funding, Cluster schools met at HPPS with Dr Paul Swan learning about mathematics.  Currently, one person is being funded to attend Teach Well and one data interpretation, both initiatives identified by Principals at Network meetings.  The Balcatta Cluster is made up of West Balcatta PS, Balcatta SHS, Balcatta PS, Osborne PS, Tuart Hill PS and Takari PS.  The Network Principals meet once each term in week 5 on a Thursday at 1.00pm at one of the Network Schools.

We pursue industry and business partnerships that enhance educational opportunities for students.  Currently, we are working in this area and have the following in place.

1          Contract with a musician teaching guitar hiring a Hawker Hub room – money used for students and paying for utilities/cleaning.

2          Contract with Weightwatchers hiring our Staff Room – money used for students.

3          Contract with Zig-Zag that hire EC3 – money used for students.

4          Contract with Basket Ball Group that use our courts – money used for students.

5          The Exchange Company that will be hiring space in Hawker Hub for clothing exchange/purchase – money used for students.

6          Choir Singing Group that uses our music room – a community service offered by the school – positive relationship with the community.

7          The Spine Studio Warwick – Chiropractic group partnership – free professional learning for staff and free checks for our students.

8          Monday morning Playgroup – a community service offered by the school – positive relationships with the community.

SCHOOL BOARD

Our next School Board Meeting on Wednesday 7 August at 6:00pm will be a Public Meeting.  The Board members invite parents to attend this meeting and observe.  You will see how meetings are conducted and what is discussed.  We intend providing a Webex link for parents who cannot attend.

SCHOOL PROCESSES/ Bicycles

The school now has an ENCLOSED bike rack with the permanent gate installed only last week.  Older students lock the gate at approximately 8:40 in the morning and unlock the gate close to the afternoon siren at 2:50.  We thank the P&C who helped us pay to enclose the bike rack.

For the safety of all concerned, students need to walk their bicycles on and off the school grounds.  They are strongly encouraged to lock bicycles to the bike rack inside the enclosure.  Students must wear a helmet and ride straight home unless they have parental permission to ride elsewhere.

STUDENTS LEAVING HPPS

To assist with our School and class planning for 2025, please inform Admin ASAP if you know that your child/ren will not be returning to Hawker Park Primary School in the coming year. This does not apply to our current Year 6 students.

Thank you

DID YOU KNOW?

  • If your child is unwell, please keep the child at home.
  • As a courtesy, the school will always ring the parent/guardian if a child sustains any head or eye injury. As we are not medical practitioners, parents/carers make the decision regarding what steps to take next, such as, coming to the school to check their child for themselves, taking the child home, taking the child to the doctor.

KINDY 2025 ENROLMENTS CLOSED!

Could we please also ask that anyone who has enrolled their child at HPPS for Kindy in 2025 come to the office and pickup their Enrolment Form to be completed and returned to the office at your earliest convenience.

NATIONAL SCHOOL TREE DAY FRIDAY 26TH JULY

On Friday 26th of July, the children from TA 7, Year 5, planted seventeen native shrubs between the Library and the Science room. The money for the shrubs were kindly donated by City Toyota. Our school gardeners selected the plants and the children working in pairs or by themselves planted them along with James’ Dad, who works at City Toyota. We look forward to watching them grow and turn what was once a pretty much open space into a wonderful native garden.
